What Should You Expect During Root Canal Recovery?

A root canal is a major dental procedure and you should anticipate a few days of recovery time before you feel normal again. It is important to follow your endodontist and dentist’s instructions carefully during this time as a root canal is only part of the process to restoring your tooth’s usability. Once you have healed completely from your root canal, your dentist will place a crown on top to protect the remaining tooth.

Here are some important tips for root canal recovery:

  • Use over-the-counter pain medicines if needed for tenderness and jaw soreness.
  • Tenderness will probably last a few days, but if you have severe pain or intense pressure, be sure to contact your dental professionals to let them know.
  • Wait until the numbness wears off completely before trying to eat. You don’t want to accidentally bite yourself.
  • Make sure you maintain your regular brushing and flossing routine.
  • Contact your dental professional if your bite is not even or if you can see swelling.
  • Don’t use your affected tooth to chew food until it has been fully restored.
  • Your affected tooth may not feel like your other teeth for a while.

The great news is that a root canal can result in a tooth that will last just like all your other teeth. If you have any questions, please contact our office. We look forward to hearing from you and to helping you maintain the health and beauty of your smile!
