A root canal is a common dental procedure designed to save a tooth from decay that’s infiltrated the root. After you have a root canal done, it’s normal for you to experience some tenderness near the area as your mouth heals. Following the treatment process, you may also feel some tenderness in your jaw from keeping your mouth open for an extended time period.

What Can You Expect After Getting a Root Canal?

Root CanalFor a while after your root canal treatment, the tooth that had work done on it may feel differently from the other teeth in your mouth. Unless you experience pressure or severe pain that lasts for more than a few days, you have nothing to worry about.

To ensure that your tooth heals as quickly as possible after you have a root canal, we have a few recommendations for post-treatment care:

  • Until the numbness in your mouth starts to fade, refrain from eating anything. This will help you avoid biting your tongue or cheek.
  • Wait to bite or chew on the treated tooth until we finish the restoration process completely.
  • Don’t forget to floss your teeth once a day and brush your teeth at least twice a day like normal.
  • Contact us right away if you think the temporary filling covering the treatment area has come out.
  • Make sure you call our office right away if there is visible swelling on the outside or the inside of your mouth or if your bite starts to feel uneven.
